A tropical tree bearing fragrant flowers and fruits, Cananga odorata originated in Malaysia and the Philippines. The Cananga tree is also referred to as the “Macassar oil plant”, “perfume tree”, and “Ylang Ylang tree”. The tree is known for its rich essential oils, extracted from the Ylang Ylang flowers. These flowers blossom constantly, although more often during the rainy season. They appear in clusters, starting out small and green. In about 20 days, the flowers are bright yellow and highly perfumed. A green seedy fruit succeeds the flowers and provides many native birds with an abundant food source.
Recently, exports have diminished due to neglect of the plantations and a shortage of combustible wood for the process of distillation. Lower quality varieties of Cananga tree oil are being produced and sold as Ylang Ylang oil for a much cheaper price. These oils come from another variety of the Cananga tree that grows abundantly elsewhere. This counterfeit Ylang Ylang essential oil is used in cheap perfumes and soap in the cosmetic industry. This cheap variety of Cananga oil holds little therapeutic value, compared to pure Ylang Ylang essential oil. Cruz Hemp uses only 100% Pure Ylang Ylang essential oil distilled from the flowers of the Cananga odorata tree.
At the beginning of the twentieth-century, Chemists Garnier and Rechler researched the medicinal benefits of Ylang Ylang oil. They found it to have good results on malaria, typhus, and other fevers. They discovered it could be used as an antiseptic for intestinal infections, diarrhea, and flatulence. It is believed to regulate heart action, relieve high blood pressure, normalize sebum secretion for skin problems, and is considered to be an aphrodisiac. Historically, islanders have been using pure Ylang Ylang extracts in salves along with turmeric and coconut oil to protect and prevent fevers and contagions during the rainy season. They also used Ylang Ylang oil to avoid snake and insect bites.
The oil possesses anti-inflammatory, and skin preservation benefits making it the perfect addition to our skincare formulas. The oil has a lovely calming scent that helps improve moods and reduces anxiousness. Ylang Ylang is also wonderful for moisturizing and strengthening hair and improving growth. It is commonly used in pomades to reduce dry, flakiness on the scalp. There are mentions of Ylang Ylang oil being used on the skin to speed up tanning. If you are using Ylang Ylang for skincare, make sure it is 100% Pure and harvested from the Cananga odorata tree.
Common Ylang Ylang Oil Uses
Ylang Ylang essential oil is produced through the distillation of fresh flowers. The flowers must be picked at night due to the high concentration of aromatic compounds. Picking them in darkness preserves their delicate properties. When the flowers are at their most fragrant peak, they go through the distillation process. The final oil is used in aromatherapy, skincare, and perfume.
